So I work at a very culturally diverse workplace. Some folks are more familiar with American food than others.

Anyway, this morning, one of my co-workers asked if he could have a BlowPop from this big basket of candy I keep in my cube.

He came back about twenty minutes later with an extremely worried look and asked:

“Rob, that candy I had, are you supposed to eat the whole thing?”

“Um..not the stick part…no”

“No no, I know about that. What was that chewy part? It wasnt all that crunchy”

“Oh…I thought you knew about blowpops. You see, there is gum in the middle. You chew on that. Its Gum. See…Blow (I blow a bubble)…pop. The trick is that you need to give it a little bit of work to get the gum started.”

“I just ate all of it. Is that ok? If I ate the gum.”

“Well…you know there are all kinds of urban legends on gum staying for years in you appendix”

“No no…your ok…its only an urban legend.”

(followed by an explaination of urban legends).

I then gave him another Blowpop, shoo’d him out of my cube and told him to practice some more.

I had meant to post this describing the story of pinchy. Pieced together from emails and (faded) memory.

So The Boys Named Sue had a great gig playing for a Frat Party on lower greenville. It was a Dental Frat. I know…huh…but they had beer, crawfish and paid in cash. Turns out that they had way too many crawfish. After the gig, Ginger Sue decides to liberate them by setting them free in Turtle Creek. Not throughly convinced, that this is a good idea, I chose the biggest one, stuck him in a cup and called him pinchy. Apparently, I took pinchy across to the Green Elephant bar as well. I dont recall this part. In fact, Im pretty sure the bouncers would have invoked the “no open container” rule at this point. Sir, Im going to have to ask you to dump your Crawfish in the bushes.

Whatever “really” happened, Pinchy eventually ended up on the counter in my kitchen. At first, I was about to place him in the fish tank, but I settled for a big bucket of water.

Then next day, I was going out the door to work and realized that Pinchy was in the kitchen. I figured maybe I would just come back for lunch and make a small meal of him. Nope. Pinchy was gone. Crap.

I searched high and low…no pinchy. Couldn’t do much about it…so I left for work.

Over the course of a few weeks, I would make random searches. I cleaned the living room and front rooms inside out. The only place I didnt look was the computer room, because that door was always shut and there was no way it could get that far.

Well…turns out pinchy made his way to the computer room and was in the window sill by the file cabinet. Scared the tar outta me as I was gathering tax info.

Poor guy…made it to the window. I had that room closed…I didnt think it would have made it there. And the window is behind the cabinet, so I never looked there. Didnt smell. He just kinda dried up. (Winter time A/C does that to houses)

We were all “Daaa duh duh Daaa” and everyone was all “Yaaaa… you rock” and then Snakebite sue was all “Crashhhhhhh….uh…waaaa happen?”, and we didnt even stop. Nobody had any broken bones and I think the only thing we hurt was our livers.

Be there again as we try and top last weeks madness.

Boys Named Sue @ Muddy Waters Sunday night. Starting 9ish until someone gets hurt.

Also….Saturday, Amy is having her Photo show at Muddy Waters with a reception and some food

Been Gigging

Monday, July 14th, 2003

Sup? I was scolded by many folks (including my mom) for not posting more often. I guess this is how some people check up on me. Its been a busy few weeks. These past two weekends have been a lot of work for Trainwreck. We did a gig on July 4th at Hico along with Heath Tolleson and Thrift Store Cowboys. If you have not seen either of them, CHECK EM OUT. The Thift Store CD has not left my truck since the day I bought it. If you like Old 97s, Calexico, or Deadman, you will love the band. Plus…they have a fiddler….so Im partial to that.

Last weekend we played Barley house on Friday and opened for Jack Ingram up in wichita falls.
Photos for the weekend are here.

So my buddy Dan got married in Chicago. I flew up for that and it was a GREAT trip. I always have a blast in Chicago. The food is STELLAR, the nightlife rocks and the weather was just wonderful. Of course, most of the time, this is not the case. My only issue with the trip was the hotel I stayed at. I was at the Travelodge right in the loop. The location is excellent. Right across the street from the park in the loop, and its the cheapest rooms in the loop. However…I dont see myself staying there again, and I have practically non-existent standards when it comes to lodging. Typically, as long as the “sleeping surface” (be it a bed, the floor, sofa or whatever) is not damp and stinky, Im fine whereever I end up. I learned to deal with it after touring with Mark David Manders. At the time, he was only getting one room for 5 guys. We actually drew straws for the privledge of sleeping on the floor. (since then, he has Heather as a fiddle player, so he has to get two rooms.)

Anyway, this place sucked….and I saw my first bed bug.

The Wedding was really nice though. Pic are here

Had the best pizza at Exchecquerpub. True deep dish in the truest
of ways. Oh…I also got to attend the 90th birthday of Pinetop Perkins at Rosas.

Got to see the Sidehill Gougers after the big Dallas Observer Show. They rocked. They played from 9 to 2 STRAIGHT. Well, some folks kinda came and went on and off the stage…but there was always music. Heavy on the Gram. The way Daddy likes it!
