Kitten Time

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Kitty, a stray that has settled into Spyche’s place, had a kitten!

We are not really sure of kittys background. Its even suspect that she used to live in that house all along and perhaps the previous owner left her.

In any case, kitty was getting bigger and bigger and when she finally was taken to the vet for an inital checkup, it was confirmed that she was pregnant.

Her water broke (I didnt know that they did that) on Wed night. We frantically hit the interwebs to see what the signs of a cat going into labor was.

Lost of appetite - Check
Affectionate - Check (but she is always that way)
Hiding in safe place - “Wheres kitty? Hiding behind the door” - Check

Luckily a trip was made that very day for towels and a nesting box. She kinda had this surprise “help me” look on her face and was promptly scooped into the box and in about an hour, we had a new kitten.

We were pretty worried about what to do with a big basket of kittens, but kitty only had one kitten.

Here are pics one day old.

Its tomato time again

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Found an article that describes perfectly how I need to be approaching this growing season.

July is pretty much too hot for tomatoes.  The big problem is that they will not set fruit when its too hot, so that gives us two quick growing seasons.  Last year I left my plants out all summer hoping that they would produce, but they just kinda hung out in a diseased state.  Being that most plants are like 70 days till maturity….that puts a maturity date of mid-june back to planting in  April….which is now.

This year I grew WAY to many plants from seeds.  I started in mid January and they were getting kinda lanky, but the ones I have in the ground now look pretty good.  Pics to follow.

Heres the article.

RE: advice on tomatoes for a rookie in North Texas

Manny,First, I’m pretty sure you are actually in growing zone 8a, not 7.

I’m guessing you started at least a month too late. It’s a common mistake. Once daily high temperatures stay in the 90-100 range, tomatoes will not set fruit! So we must plant very large transplants as early as possible. Instead of planting the little 5″ transplants in 6-packs from Home Depot sometime in April, we really need to plant 12″ tall transplants on March 1st if we have hope of getting lots of tomatoes. You have to watch weather predictions like a hawk. If you grow tomatoes in 5-10 gallon containers (use potting mix or potting soil NOT garden soil), then you can move them inside if an overnight frost (under 35 degrees) is predicted.

Tomato plants will not generally set fruit unless the daily high temperatures stay below 85 for a few days. This is unlikely to happen in July-August around Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. We really have 2 frustratingly short tomato growing seasons interrupted by a 2-3 month inferno that produces 0 fruit and tons of diseases, insects, and problems.

Most S.E. Texans have pulled their tomato plants by the end of June or mid-July and have already got seeds started indoors for the fall crop. Even if you could nurse an unproductive tomato plant through July, August, and September, by the time it starts producing tomatoes again, they wouldn’t be very good. I started seeds June 5th and will be putting my second wave of tomato plants in the ground at the end of July.

I’m sure there are small nurseries (not the big box stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, etc.) around Wylie, Dallas, Plano, etc. that will have tomato transplants in the coming weeks. There are at least 2 nurseries in Houston that are supposed to have tomato transplants in 2-3 weeks.

Note that Dallas gets frost a little earlier in the fall than Houston (we sometimes don’t get a frost til January) so you really want to focus on smaller-fruited varieties for the fall. Once frost hits, it’s all about fried green tomatoes since they won’t ripen anymore.

Hal Samples is a Dallas-based photographer & documentary film-maker currently working through HeroToZero.org to raise awareness for homelessness. Samples is using art as a vehicle to fight poverty and injustice and has produced over two dozen installations about the indigent population of his hometown. The homeless tuation has been the focus of debate in the Dallas government and media, focusing attention on co-existing realities in one of the country’s wealthiest cities. This visionary media work has expanded to other major metropolitan areas around the globe including Europe, Mexico, and South America.

This Saturday, at Hero to Zero’s Third Anniversary Benefit, Samples will exhibit pieces from his long anticipated new series, “Samples of Societies”. The photographs are large works, approximately three feet by five feet, and express brokenness and redemption in society. The subject matter covers homelessness, poverty, and hope in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans after the hurricane, London before and after the bombings, and portraits of his homeless friends in Dallas.

All musicians performing, (including Jayson Bales, who is well-known in the community for his work to provide local artists with access to healthcare through Dallas Music Partners), have donated their performance fees to the organization. Also on the bill: the event’s MC, comedian Tony George, Austin bands Household Names and Christina Roberts, Fort Worth’s Handclaps and Harmonies, and Dallas’ Fishing for Comets and The Dead Thing will perform. Gloria’s restaurant offers food on the patio, and there will be poetry reading, jazz and a silent auction.

Hero to Zero’s primary charter is to bring visibility to the homeless in Dallas. All proceeds from this Saturday’s event will be donated to a project spearheaded by the Dallas County Young Democrats which will provide funding for a current individual’s health care needs, case management, food pantry items, and supportive housing for a year. This is part of a “one person at a time” community initiative with Central Dallas Ministries.

July 7th Boys Named Sue @ Taste of Dallas!!! 7pm - Free

JD is the “Artist in Residency” for the 8-9 slot on Thurdays in

at the The Fine Line .

Im not sure of the full lineup for tomorrow, I think Alex might
be with us too! In any case, its early (8pm) so its almost
like a happy hour. If you have not befriended Trainwreck…please
do so…now!

Jd Whittenburg and Trainwreck!!

There are some tunes there as well as downloadable MP3s at http://www.trainwrecktx.com/ or Texasgigs.com

Come on out and have fun…its already Wed!!

Also…on Friday…the Sues are playing at the taste of Dallas.
Ok, from what I can tell, its at 7pm. This works well because Bob Schneider is there too at like 11 or so. Chicks DIG Bob Schneider, so maybe a little bit of that will rub off on us. Otherwise, its the taste of Dallas, so the only other thing rubbing off on us is mustard from the Corny Dogs.
Here the pics from last years show.

Good times.
