Hal Samples is a Dallas-based photographer & documentary film-maker currently working through HeroToZero.org to raise awareness for homelessness. Samples is using art as a vehicle to fight poverty and injustice and has produced over two dozen installations about the indigent population of his hometown. The homeless tuation has been the focus of debate in the Dallas government and media, focusing attention on co-existing realities in one of the country’s wealthiest cities. This visionary media work has expanded to other major metropolitan areas around the globe including Europe, Mexico, and South America.
This Saturday, at Hero to Zero’s Third Anniversary Benefit, Samples will exhibit pieces from his long anticipated new series, “Samples of Societies”. The photographs are large works, approximately three feet by five feet, and express brokenness and redemption in society. The subject matter covers homelessness, poverty, and hope in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans after the hurricane, London before and after the bombings, and portraits of his homeless friends in Dallas.
All musicians performing, (including Jayson Bales, who is well-known in the community for his work to provide local artists with access to healthcare through Dallas Music Partners), have donated their performance fees to the organization. Also on the bill: the event’s MC, comedian Tony George, Austin bands Household Names and Christina Roberts, Fort Worth’s Handclaps and Harmonies, and Dallas’ Fishing for Comets and The Dead Thing will perform. Gloria’s restaurant offers food on the patio, and there will be poetry reading, jazz and a silent auction.
Hero to Zero’s primary charter is to bring visibility to the homeless in Dallas. All proceeds from this Saturday’s event will be donated to a project spearheaded by the Dallas County Young Democrats which will provide funding for a current individual’s health care needs, case management, food pantry items, and supportive housing for a year. This is part of a “one person at a time” community initiative with Central Dallas Ministries.
